It is simply a camshaft whose lobe profile has been designed to utilize more of the engine’s potential. Typically, a higher lift on the lobe, which increases the length of the valve stroke, allows more air to enter through the inlet valve, increasing the power potential of the engine.

Short duration cams are good for low speed torque and throttle response while long duration cams are best for high revs or engines that need to make a lot of top power. Duration cams (measured) in the 195 to 210 degree range.
Types of Camshaft
Two major types of camshafts exist flat tappet and roller. There are two options in those ranges: solid or hydraulic – four variations in total. The tappets move against the camshaft lobes – their motion opens and closes the valves.
